PINETO : THE GREEN SHORE ON THE ADRIATIC SEA

mutignano.jpg The historical roots of Pineto can be traced in the ancient hamlet of Mutignano which, by 1929, had developed in the shadow of the bordering town of Atri. At the beginning of the 19th century, most urban settlements were located on the hill whereas only very few of them overlooked the sea.

Later on, when the Consular Sea Road (leading to the Pescara valley from the border with the Papal States on the Tronto) was built, the first dwellings, mostly rural, appeared as well as Villa Filiani. Initially meant to be a summer residence, after the construction of the railway and the station in 1860, Villa Filiani became a permanent residence and gave the name to the municipality till 1925, when the name was changed into Pineto.

The Filiani family enhanced the area of the Villa-Stazione with two lines of buildings flanking the station, where a post office, a primary school, a tobacco shop, an small inn, and other services were housed, giving rise to the very first historic centre that still exists today, even though it was reconstructed over the years.

The residential development remained relatively little till the end of the 19th century, and only after World War I did the place start to grow with valuable villas and houses. At short distance is the Cerrano Tower, erected before the 13th century and then rebuilt during the Angevin reign as a watch tower against attacks from Turkish and pirates. Historic documents and finds have provided evidence of the existence of a tower and an active port at the mouth of the Cerrano dating back to ancient Roman times.

Today, the tower houses a modern marine biology laboratory aimed at sea monitoring and safeguard. The development of a charming green seaside town was planned by Luigi Filiani who decided to create a dense pine wood on the shore by planting 2000 umbrella pines (Pinus pinaea) along the beach and adding pine trees, holm-oaks and laurel on the surrounding hills, thus forming the current multi-species park embellishing Pineto. In 1926 the foundation stone of the church dedicated to Sant’Agnese was laid.

In 1955 the inauguration of the detour of the Adriatic State Road deviating heavy traffic from the town center marked a turning point in favour of the tranquillity and health of the population. In the early 70s, the last tract of the A14 was opened beyond the hill, allowing connection with the rest of Italy.

Pineto has 15000 inhabitants and is the ideal place for those who desire to stay in a calm and peaceful place without foregoing the pleasures of the modern world. Pineto can boast the Blue Flag, a special award signifying water quality and high-standard tourist facilities that the town has received for many years.

pineto1.jpgThe pine wood is the ideal setting for taking long and relaxing walks but also for cycling, thanks to the 5-kilometer cycle track connecting Pineto to Scerne, situated in a beautiful and uncontaminated area between the hills and the sea. The golden sandy beach and safe shallow water are particularly suitable for children.

As for the adults, there is a wide range of entertaining options to choose from : pubs, restaurants, dance halls as well as sports facilities like tennis and volleyball courts, a skating hall where national and international competitions are held, a bowling green and five-a-side football fields that host numerous summer tournaments.
