EXCURSIONSAbruzzo offers an endless choice of excursions meeting cultural, naturalistic, wine-and-food, and sporting needs. Undoubtedly worth-visiting is the medieval town of Atri, important centre dating back to the 11th century, the first duchy on the coast to have coined money before Rome. Other landmarks are the Sanctuary of San Gabriele, visited by 2 million tourists each year; Castelli, situated at the foot of Mount Camicia, hometown to great master ceramists who worked at the service of the king of Naples and adorned the major Roman residencies; the Fortess of Civitella del Tronto, one of the most important work of military engineering in Italy, stretching over 500 meters on a rocky crest; the Holy Staircase in Campli, so called because of the indulgence accorded since 1776 to all those believers willing to go up the staircase on their knees; the Roman church in Tossicia; the Volto Santo Sanctuary in Manoppello. Worth-mentioning are also the prestigious wineries that produce the renowned Trebbiano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. In addition, in collaboration with C.A.I. (Italian Alpine Club), it is possible to organise several trips to the mountains to follow the paths of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga. And for a comprehensive itinerary, visitors should not miss Pescara, rich in interesting sites, with its Port, its famous Pineta (pine wood) and the House of Gabriele D’Annunzio in the very heart of the old town. An enchanting destination for divers is Tremiti Islands, an uncontaminated marine park.
Abruzzo gastronomy offers a variety of specialities. The list goes from “scrippelle ‘mbusse” (rolled crêpes filled with grated cheese and served with meat broth), to the “timballo” (similar to lasagne, but made with crêpes instead of pastry sheet), “maccheroni alla chitarra” (handmade pasta served with meat sauce and tasty tiny meat balls) ravioli with “ricotta” cheese, and “brodetto di pesce” (typical fish soup).
Special mention deserve the premium-quality olive oil, the various kinds of cold meats and salami, and the “pecorino” cheese, a homemade speciality which can be directly purchased from local farmers. All served with the excellent local wines “Montepulciano d’Abruzzo” and “Trebbiano”.
